This unique table lamp has been made from an old paraffin / benzine blowtorch. Made in Germany circa 1940 by German engineering firm E. Hähnel, these blow torches were issued to the Wehrmacht and in particular the Panzer division for use in warming the tank engines before starting them in cold weather and also for servicing the tank tracks. Unlike most other early 20th century blow lamps, this wartime model was not made from brass because during the war brass was needed for ammunition and was too valuable for this rot of use. Consequently this lamp was made from steel and fortunately has retained it’s deep green painted finish (almost black) which has developed a deep lustre over the years. The E. Hähnel makers mark is present on a small plate on the handle and is also embossed on the brass burner along with the numbers 200/300. E. Hahnel further appears embossed on the original bakelite control knob.
The hollow handle has a screw off cap at the bottom and was used to store spare parts – it still contains a spare washer and a new “pricker” wrapped up in original paper packing. Ironically though, the pricker is not a Hahnel one but instead is a monitor brand with the packing proudly reading
“Prickers for the Monitor (Registered Trade Mark) Wickless Stoves & Blowlamps British Made Throughout!
This was likely placed there as a spare sometime after the war – possibly by a British solider who, perhaps, brought this home as a useful battlefield souvenir. What a story this item would tell if only it could talk!
The blowtorch has been cleaned, polished and clear coated to reduce tarnishing in future. It has been professionally and sympathetically converted to a table lamp and has been fitted with a very fitting black “distressed” fabric covered twisted power cord which has a retro style inline switch for convenient control of the light.
The lamp can be fitted with any E14 SES (small edison screw) bulb and is shown in the photos with both a filament candle style bulb which is quite bright and a “flickering” flame bulb which is much dimmer but has an interesting little moving flicker. I will send either type of bulb with the lamp – just let me know which you prefer.
This and my other items made from reclaimed or salvage components will have been cleaned and subjected to a range of finishing treatments, all of these items will display imperfections and show signs of their history through the odd scratch or dent picked up with wear and handling over the years. This is what gives these items their charm and warmth and makes each one truly unique, it is not a fault, it is an enhancement and is what has lead to the creation of the finished item.
The electrical conversion has been carried out by a qualified electrical engineer and this lamp comes complete with a current portable appliance test (PAT) certificate for your safety and peace of mind.
All electrical items carry a two month guarantee and faulty items can be sent back for repairs. You will be responsible for posting the item back to me but I will repair and return it free of charge. Please do not attempt repairs or to disassemble items yourself, this can be dangerous and may lead to further problems possibly resulting in the item being non-repairable. Bulbs, where included, are tested before shipping and are not returnable. Please contact me BEFORE returning any items. This item is wired for UK use with a standard three pin mains plug is fitted but this could be easily changed to any international standard.
